Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu urges APC to focus on improving Nigerian lives

The Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, has asked the All Progressive Congress (APC) to set aside bickering and focus on how to improve the general welfare and standard of living of Nigerians.

Sen Ekweremadu, who stated this while a Coalition of Election Observers, paid him courtesy visit in the National Assembly, implored the APC-led government to form policies and programmes that would benefit majority of Nigerians irrespective of political affiliation.

He said the 8th National Assembly is about to put together a legislative agenda for the 8th Senate which will include further amending the Electoral Act to make the 2019 elections more credible and acceptable than that of 2015 general elections.

The APC has been at loggerheads with the leadership of the National Assembly over candidates to fill in the offices of principal officers of the upper and lower legislative chambers.

The Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, had defied the directive of the APC on choice of other principal officers, announcing names of three candidates for the Senate leadership positions different from the names submitted by the party.

Senator Saraki announced Senator Ali Ndume as Senate Majority Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na Allah as Deputy Senate Majority Leader and Senator Francis Alimikhena as Deputy Chief Whip.

The APC has, however, warned that it won’t accept any other appointments of the National Assembly principal officers outside the ones sent to the leadership of the upper and lower legislative chambers.

The National Secretary of the Party, Mr Mai Mala Buni in a statement on Thursday, June 25 said the party will only stand by the list sent to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House

Mr Buni adds that the National Caucus, Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Council (NEC) of the party will meet within the next few days to discuss the evolving developments in the National Assembly with the view of proffering a permanent solution to the crisis.
