Biafra: IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu writes British government; ...demands rights as a British citizen

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has petitioned the British High Commission against his continuous trial by the federal government.

Kanu was arrested by officials of the Department of State Securities (DSS) in October, 2015. A situation which generated mass protest in the southeastern part of Nigeria. He is yet to be released from detention.

"We'll get Biafra or die trying" - IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Monday said that the group will not retreat on its quest for a sovereign state, stating that ‘It is either we get Biafra or die trying’.

The spokesmen of IPOB, Emma Nmezu and Clifford Chukwuemeka Iroanya‎ in a statement issued on Monday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, adding that he should abide by existing court orders regarding Kanu’s case.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, today, took the the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, to the cleaners, saying he agreed in secret to renounce ‘Biafra’ in exchange for freedom, only to act hypocritically in public after sealing discussion with MEND on the matter.

Spokesperson of MEND, Jomo Gbomo, in a vitriolic statement, said: “The attention of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has been drawn to the recent spate of hypocritical and provocative statements issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu,”

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu yesterday, exploded from his prison custody when he insisted that his decision to restore the nation of Biafra was not his personal choice but a mandate from the Most High God (Chiukwu-okike-abiama) which was assigned to him from time immemorial.

He maintained that the restoration of the nation of Biafra is a priority and a project that must be achieved under the watchful eyes of the IPOB led by himself, an arduous task that must be accomplished in order to lead his people out of the contraption called Nigeria, without fear of death.

"Government’s poor strategies inflamed renewed Biafra agitation" — Rev. Kukah

The renewed clamour for the actualisation of Biafra Republic would not have arisen if the government had adopted sound strategies to address the issues, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev Matthew Hassan Kukah, has said.

According to him, ‘’the so called movement for Biafra has gestated more as a result of the poor strategy that the government may have adopted in dealing with these issues.”

IPOB described the NDA, which has crippled oil production by blowing up pipelines as its “kith and kin.”

Biafra: IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu asks judge to disqualify himself

The self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu, and his co-defendants, David Nwawusi and Benjamin Madubugwu have asked Justice James Tsoho of a Federal High Court, Abuja to disqualify himself from trying them on the six-count charge, bordering on treason preferred against them by the federal government.

The defendants, in a motion cited the manifestation of bias against the court, which is also a subject of investigation by the National Judicial Council against the judge.

"Investigation confirms Nigerian Army killed 17 unarmed Biafran supporters" – Amnesty International

Amnesty International says its investigation has confirmed that the Nigerian army gunned down 17 unarmed people during last month’s Biafran commemoration events in Onitsha, Anambra State.

In a statement on Friday, the international human rights body said evidence gathered from eyewitnesses, morgues and hospitals confirms that between 29-30 May, 2016, the Nigerian military opened fire on members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), supporters and bystanders at three locations in the town.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo condemns killing of pro-Biafra protesters

The apex-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, wednesday in Enugu condemned in strong terms last Monday’s killings of scores of pro-Biafra agitators under the aegis of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Onitsha, Anambra State by security agencies comprising a detachment of Nigerian Army, Navy, Police, Department of State Services (DSS) and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The organisation said it would not accept the defence put up by the Nigerian Army that they acted in self-defence and out of provocation.

"We are not part of Biafra" - Delta State Govt

The Delta State Government, Wednesday said the people of the State are part of the proposed Biafra Republic, reaffirming their belief in one and united Nigeria.

The State Government in a state statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Chief Festus Agas, urged the people of the state to remain law abiding and go about their normal business without fear.

Police IG orders police to disarm members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, has ordered senior officers in the South-East and the South-South geopolitical zones to immediately disarm members of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

The IG said this in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, while reacting to the killing of policemen by some pro-Biafran activists on Monday.

Police arrest MASSOB members in Asaba and Owerri

Police have arrested eight and wounded four members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) who were involved in the killing of two policemen in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.

The arrests were made by the Delta State Police Command on Monday.

According to a statement signed by the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Charles Muka, the members of the group attacked policemen and army patrol team at three locations at Cable Point and Abraka areas where they killed two policeman, injured two others and made away with one AK.47 rifle and one smoke gunner.

The South-east and South-south regions of the country dissolved into a state of anarchy yesterday when thousands of protesters clashed with security forces in Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Delta, Cross River and Ebonyi States, leading to the deaths of dozens of people, including three policemen, several sustaining injuries, and the arrest of scores of protesters in all the states where the protests took place.

The protesters, who were mainly members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), had come out en masse to mark Biafra Day in memory of the former leader of the defunct Biafra Republic, the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Biafra: Appeal Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s bail application

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has refused to grant a bail application by the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Mr Kanu had asked the court to determine whether the ruling by Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court was not an aberration of his fundamental rights as stipulated in the constitution.

Biafra: IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu heads for ECOWAS court; ...blames President Buhari for bail denial

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for his continued detention since last October.

Mr. Kanu is accused, along with two others, Benjamin Madubgwu and James Nwawuisi, of treason.

He has been in the custody of the State Security Service since he was arrested on October 14, 2015.

Biafra: Appeal Court reserves ruling on detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s bail

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division on Thursday reserved ruling in the appeal filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB against the 29, January judgment of Federal High Court, Abuja denying him and two others bail.

The appellate court reserved ruling following exchange of briefs between M.M Diri, the lead counsel to the respondent which is the Federal Government and Chuks Momah(SAN) counsel to the appellant.

High Court refuses application for stay of proceedings filed by Nnamdi Kanu

A Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, has refused application for stay of proceedings filed by the self-styled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Mr Kanu had asked the court to stay proceedings pending the determination of his appeal before the appellate court.

Abia State Government accuses APGA of sponsoring Biafra protests

The Abia State government has accused the opposition All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, of being behind the protests by IPOB, and the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, which are calling for an independent state of Biafra.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Bonnie Iwuoha, who stated this in an interview with newsmen in Aba alleged that APGA leaders engaged the protesting youths to destabilize Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration, and warned that government will no longer tolerate the activities of disgruntled elements.

Addressing newsmen, yesterday, in Nnewi, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Media and Publicity Officer, Mr. Emma Powerful alleged that the Federal Government through the DSS has perfected plans to systematically kill IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu in the DSS cell by denying him doctors’ attention and subjecting him to torture on daily basis.
“Information from a reliable DSS source revealed that the Federal Government is also planning to transfer Mr. Kanu to a particular cell in the country where members of Boko Haram are detained, and it is their plan to kill him there,” he said

"Nnamdi Kanu's hate speech was unnecessary; ...never knew what war looks like" - Onitsha Chief, Godwin Odukwe

One of the persons that contested for the throne of Obi of Onitsha, Chief Godwin Odukwe, has said that the leader of IPOB, and Director, Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu personally put himself into the trouble he is currently going through, saying that he does not have the right to breach the norms and the unity of Nigeria.

The Onitsha chief spoke as Nigerians continue to react to the continued incarceration of Kanu, despite the protests for his release, in South East and South South states by pro Biafra agitators.
