The new Rivers Stat Police Commissioner, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, has reaffirmed the ban on political rallies in the state.
His predecessor, Mr. Joseph Mbu, had announced a ban on political
rallies in the twilight of his tenure, stating that the rallies
heightened the tension in the state.
The action also drew condemnation from politicians and civil organisations who said the police commissioner had no such powers.
But in his maiden press briefing Thursday at the headquarters of the
state police command, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Ogunsakin said, “In
accordance with Section 99 (1) of the Electoral Act, political rallies
are not allowed to hold or commence in any part of Nigeria until 90 days
preceding the date of the elections, and Rivers state should not be an
exception.”
