NASS Crisis: APC Senators vow to boycott Senate whenever Ekweremadu presides

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu
All Progressives Congress senators under the aegis of Unity Forum, have vowed never to attend plenary when the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, presides.

This was disclosed Wednesday evening by a senator representing Kaduna North, Suleiman Hunkunyi, who speaks for the Unity Forum senators.

Mr. Ekweremadu is a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

He emerged deputy to Bukola Saraki of All Progressives Congress, after the later, with the support of the PDP, emerged Senate President defying the ruling party.

Mr. Ekweremadu presided over Thursday’s plenary, as Mr. Saraki was at the Presidential Villa, where he was attending the swearing-in ceremony of the new ministers.

But the Ahmed Lawan-led anti-Saraki senators, including George Akume and Mr. Hunkunyi, staged a walkout on the plenary in protest of Mr. Ekweremadu’s presiding.

Mr. Hunkunyi said the Unity Forum senators would not attend plenary presided over by Mr. Ekweremadu.

He explained that the APC senators would not subscribe to the leadership of an opposition senator.

Mr. Saraki later returned to preside over yesterday’s plenary.

He came back shortly before questions that followed a motion on operations of Treasury Single Account by Dino Melaye were called.

The Senate therefore went into closed door session.
