Nigeria’s
President, Muhammadu Buhari, has praised the U.S. Government for
mounting pressure on the past administration in Nigeria to ensure that
Nigeria conducted a credible 2015 general elections.
The President was speaking in a joint press conference he had with President Obama in the Oval Office on Monday.
President
Buhari recalled the visits of the American Secretary of State to
Nigeria prior to the elections, saying that but for such pressure,
Nigeria might not have been where it is democratically.
On his part, President Obama described Nigeria as one of the most important countries in the world and the African continent.
He
described the peaceful elections that brought President Buhari to power
as an affirmation of Nigeria’s readiness to embrace democracy.
He
said that President Buhari came into office with a reputation for
integrity, commending his focus on safety and security of the Nigerian
people.
He observed that President Buhari had a clear agenda about how to deal with Boko Haram as well as wipe out corruption.
He said that he looked forward to partnering with Nigeria to bring the country on the path of prosperity.
The press conference was held just before both leaders went into a meeting at the White House.
The
Nigerian President is presenting the issues of security, unemployment
and the fight against corruption. He has expressed happiness that the
U.S. has made it clear that it would help Nigeria to deal with the
issues, going forward.
President Buhari earlier held a breakfast
meeting with the United States Vice President, Joe Biden, from which
journalists were barred.
