A
middle-aged woman, Mr. Agnes Uchendu, and her son, Ikechukwu Uchendu,
of Arochukwu Street, Umuahia, are in police net for allegedly inflicting
injuries on their domestic helps with hot electric iron.
The
Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke, said the suspects
were picked up based on a petition by the International Federation of
Women Lawyers, Abia State Chapter, led by one Florence Igwe.
He explained that the suspects allegedly tortured their maids ─ Hope Ajunwa, 11; and Ngozi Ajunwa, 9.
He
said, “Upon the receipt of the petition, operatives proceeded to the
address and arrested both suspects and rescued the victims, who were
covered with injuries which were inflicted on them by the suspects with a
hot pressing iron. One of the victims, Ajunwa, also had injuries in the
sole of her foot.
“Upon interrogation, Ikechukwu said he disciplined the minors with iron for stealing N100.”
He said the victims had been admitted to the Nigeria Police Clinic Umuahia, for medical attention.
Onyeke said the case was still under investigation, adding that the suspects would soon be arraigned in court.
