Nigeria
at the weekend won eight medals at the just concluded African Wrestling
Championships in Cairo, Egypt, in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman
categories.
In the Freestyle, the female duo of Blessing
Oborodudu (63kg) and Odunayo Adekuoroye (53kg), a 2014 Commonwealth
Games gold medallist, won gold medals, with Blessing winning her fifth
straight African title. Silver medals were won by Aminat Adeniyi (58kg)
and Amas Daniel (86kg), whilst Saso Tamara (86kg) and Ebikewenimi Welson
(57kg) won bronze medals.
In the Greco-Roman style, Emmanuel Nwori (75kg) and Ituru Oke (66kg) won bronze medals in their class.
An
elated Nigeria Wrestling Federation President, Daniel Igali, who
announced these results, said it showed that the country’s wrestlers
have been improving in their training and confidence. He urged Nigerians
to expect results like this at the All Africa Games in September and
the World Championships also in the same month.
Igali was
confident that Nigeria would be able to present up to 10 wrestlers at
the Olympic Games in Rio next year from the expected performance of
these wrestlers at the World Championships, which would serve as the
Olympics qualifiers.
