Manchester United’s opening bid of £32 million for Sergio Ramos has
been rejected by Real Madrid, but Louis van Gaal is still determined to
push ahead with a deal.
United have received sufficient
encouragement that their ambitious bid could be completed and want the
defender to make it clear that he is open to leaving the Bernabéu.
Ramos has yet to go public on his desire to pursue a new challenge but
United are pushing for the 29-year-old to prove that they are not being
used as leverage for a new contract.
The Spain international,
who has two years remaining on his contract, met with Madrid officials
on Wednesday morning and is thought to be disillusioned because his
future at the club is unclear.
He informed the club’s chief
executive, José Ángel Sánchez, that he would be willing to hold formal
negotiations with United and thus possibly to end an association with
Real Madrid that has lasted almost a decade.
It was believed
that United would offer a swap deal including goalkeeper David De Gea
yet they have moved for Ramos separately and their interest is serious.
