Wayne Rooney returns to Manchester United team for final game of the season

Wayne Rooney will return to the Manchester United team for the final game of the season against Hull.

Rooney was forced to miss the draw with Arsenal because of a dead leg, but he has returned to training and will captain the side at the KC Stadium.

David De Gea, however, remains a doubt, as a result of the hamstring injury he sustained late on against the Gunners.

The goalkeeper trained on Friday but manager Louis van Gaal will not make a decision on his participation until Saturday.

“That I don’t know yet,” Van Gaal told MUTV when asked whether De Gea would be fit to face Hull.

“He has trained today but only with our goalkeeper trainer. He still has a little problem so I want to wait a day longer because I want him to play against Hull City. Rooney is available. He is the captain so I can say he shall play.”
Having secured a top four finish, United have little to play for, but the Tigers will be relegated if they fail to beat their visitors and Van Gaal believes it is important for him to field his best possible squad.
“I think you have to put out your strongest team because it’s very important for Hull,” he stated.

“It’s the same approach as ever. We need to defend the image of Manchester United and we are ending in fourth position, so we have to give our utmost best.

“We haven’t won so many matches away, so it’s very difficult to beat English Premier League clubs away. We shall do our utmost best. We have to do it for the honesty of the league.”
