The
Rivers State Police Command has promised to guarantee security of lives
and property during and after the local government elections billed to
hold on Saturday, May 23.
The command stated this during the
promotion ceremony of 15 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) to
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and 11 DSPs to Superintendent of
Police at its headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
According
to the Police, there will be restriction of movement of vehicles across
the state between 10pm on Friday till 6am on Saturday in the first
instance, then from 9am till 6pm the same day.
However, this is against calls from some quarters for the cancellation of the election.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state has stated its resolve to boycott the polls, insisting it’s a sham.
The
All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated its readiness to participate
in the polls in line with the schedule of the Rivers State Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Meanwhile, the
Commissioner of Police in the state, Dan Bature, told reporters in his
office that his command is on ground to check any attempt by anyone to
disrupt the process.
