National Hospital workers to embark on 3-day warning strike

Members of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) at the National Hospital Abuja embark on a three – day warning strike over unpaid allowances on Monday, May 25 resume.

Mr Abduljelil Kilani, CHhairman, Senior Staff Association of Joint Health Sector Union and representative of MHWUN in the hospital, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

He said that the union had resolved to go on strike over to unpaid allowances by the hospital management.

Kilani said although the union and the management had met over the issue, the talks yielded no positive results.

“The management met with us and they promised to take the matter to the Ministry of Health because they will be meeting today by 2 p.m. with the Minister of State.

“They promised that by Monday or Tuesday the management board of the hospital will meet and this issue will be presented.

“We cannot hold the board to anything yet and so we have to embark on a three-day warning strike, ” he said.
Kilani, however, lauded the management for accepting to improve the remuneration of GL 07 and 08 of some union members which was one of the issues the union was demanding.

He said MHWUN would be on three days “sit at home” warning strike except there was any positive outcome from the subsequent meetings with the hospital management board.

Kilani said that members union would be on May 28 to discuss the way forward.

Kilani recalled that the new salary structure had been implemented by other tertiary health institutions across the country but the National Hospital had yet to address the issue.

Mr Tayo Haastrup, spokesperson of the hospital said that the hospital management was already dealing with the issue.

“The good thing about it is that the management is already dialoguing, discussing and talking to them.

“The management is not against the welfare of the staff of National Hospital because welfare is very paramount to the management.

“As I am talking to you now another meeting is going on with them and I strongly believe that after the meeting this issue will be resolved,” Haastrup said.
He, however, said the issue would not end in any strike.

NAN recalls that the MHWUN at the National Hospital had been on a three -day work to rule over the non-implementation of the new salary structure in favour of some of its members.

The workers came to work and protested from 8.00 a.m. to noon before carrying out their duties.
