The well-regarded and experienced Alves looks set to leave the Nou Camp following the forthcoming Champions League final after failing to agree terms on a new contract.
Available on a free transfer, it is understood that United have expressed interest.
Manager Louis van Gaal believes the 32-year-old may prove a reliable and valuable squad player even though the club would have to pay out high wages in order to secure him on a relatively short-term deal.
Alves said this week: 'I may have two feet in the team but I've also got one foot, my body and nearly my head out of the club.United have had a long-standing interest in Southampton full back Nathaniel Clyne but the young England star has also been offered a new contract at his current club.
'I would like to stay here but not at any price. Not only in terms of money but in terms of respect. If I'm not shown that respect, I'll go to another club.'
