Bayern
Munich’s Arjen Robben is out for the rest of the season after tearing a
muscle during his side’s German Cup semi-final loss to Borussia
Dortmund – while the striker Robert Lewandowski broke his jaw and nose
and suffered concussion.
Bayern, who face Barcelona in the
Champions League semi-finals, are already without Franck Ribéry and
David Alaba, while Bastian Schweinsteiger has only recently returned to
action.
Robben, out of action since 23 March
when he tore an abdominal muscle on his return from another injury, came
on in the 68th minute of the semi-final to much applause from Bayern’s
fans. But he left the field again in the 84th, clutching his calf after
going down unchallenged.
Bayern subsequently confirmed that
Robben had sustained a tear in his left calf muscle, ruling him out of
the Barcelona game, and the rest of this season. Lewandowski, meanwhile,
was hurt in a clash with the Dortmund keeper Mitch Langerak and was
taken to hospital.
Bayern, who won the Bundesliga on Sunday, had
their treble hopes dashed after missing all four of their penalties in
the shoot-out with Dortmund.
