The immigrants, who were arrested on February 9 at different locations in the state, are from diverse countries in Africa.
The state Comptroller of Immigration, Mrs. Funke Adeuyi, said the arrest was part of the activities of the NIS in getting those without valid documents out of the country.
She said, “We have thoroughly screened and profiled them. We have also identified those ones that are not here with their valid traveling documents. The comptroller described the illegal immigrants as jobless persons roaming about the streets of Calabar.
“At the end of the day, we have been able to identify 40 of them, and they will be leaving the country soon. 12 are from Mali, 10 from Burkinafaso, 6 from Niger Republic, 5 from Guinea, 3 from Senegal and 4 from Cameroon.”
Adeuyi reiterated the commitment of the command to checking every nook and cranny of the state to ensure peace and safety.
