Raheem Sterling set to sign new £100,000-a-week deal at Liverpool

Raheem Sterling is close to agreeing a new £100,000-a-week contract to stay at Liverpool.

After a week of turmoil which has seen Steven Gerrard announce he will be leaving the club at the end of the season, it has emerged that Sterling is on the verge of committing himself to a long-term deal after a stalemate over wages was broken.


The England winger, who turned 20 last month, rejected the Reds’ first offer, which was worth around £70,000 a week.

But significant progress has been made with the player’s advisers over Christmas, and Liverpool expect to announce the deal by the end of the month.

Sterling still has two-and-a-half years left on the £40,000-a-week contract he signed in December 2012.

But he is demanding a deal that reflects his growing status in the world game and is aware that Real Madrid and Manchester City are among the clubs who were monitoring his contract stand-off.

Liverpool insist they were always looking to reward Sterling for the remarkable progress he has made since arriving from QPR as a schoolboy in February 2010.
