President Jonathan pays surprise visit to Maiduguri, Borno State capital

President Goodluck Jonathan has paid a surprise visit to Maiduguri, Borno State capital, the center of the Boko Haram terror attacks.

The President embarked on the trip after laying wreaths to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja.


Sources say he is inspecting some of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

The Chief of Defense staff, Air Vice Marshall Alex Badeh and National Security adviser, Sambo Dasuki arrived the airport in a separate aircraft.

Mr. Jonathan has come under severe criticisms over the handling of the fight against the group. The president has also been criticised for not meeting with troops who complain of poor equipment and funding for the war.
 

Boko Haram recently seized Baga, a town in Borno State after sacking the military base there. Amnesty International said the group killed 2,000 residents.

The Nigerian military said only 150 people were killed.
