Workers
of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), under the aegis of
National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), staged a protest in
Abuja on Monday, demanding for the payment of their entitlements by the
Federal Government.
The workers barricaded the entrance to
the corporate headquarters of the company, in a protest they said would
force the government to attend to their request.
According to them, the government has failed to pay their allowances for the past 16 months.
They also requested that the government should pay the death benefits owed families of their late colleagues.
Addressing
the protesting workers, the General Secretary of the NUEE and the
Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero,
advised the Federal Government to settle the workers entitlements and
address the issue of power shortage.
“As we are standing here,
some of our colleagues have not received their entitlements. only 90 per
cent have been paid only 10 per cent is still remaining. An injury for
one is an injury for all,” he said.
The Zonal Organising
Secretary of the union, Comrade Temple Iworima, also criticised the
planned take-over of the corporate headquarters of the PHCN without
settling the entitlement of the workers.
