Galatasaray charged by UEFA over fan trouble in Dortmund

Galatasaray have been charged by Europe's governing body Uefa after their Champions League tie at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday was twice stopped by firecrackers.

Captain Selcuk Inan and Felipe Melo pleaded with fans who threw flares.

Dortmund fans had to protect themselves when explosives flung from the away section landed in the home stands.


Galatasaray, who lost 4-1, were fined £40,000 for flares thrown during a Champions League game at Arsenal.

Uefa's disciplinary panel will convene on 13 November to decide what sanctions to issue the Turkish club.

Uefa had said it must wait for a report from the match delegate in Dortmund before deciding whether to open disciplinary action against the 19-time Turkish champions.

Visiting supporters also set off smoke bombs at Signal Iduna Park, forcing referee Pavel Kralovec to take the players off the pitch

Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp described the behaviour of Galatasaray fans as "pure provocation".

"This is frustrating and a bad image. It casts a bit of a shadow over an otherwise great game," he said.

Group D leaders Dortmund's victory put Galatasaray on the verge of elimination from the Champions League.
