“He isn’t fit. He played in a reserve game the other day and I could run more than he did,” Redknapp told a news conference after QPR’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at Loftus Road on Sunday.Taarabt, who was on loan at Fulham and AC Milan last season, has been told he can leave QPR if the club’s £4.5m asking price is matched, but Redknapp said before the international break that there had been minimal interest in the Morocco international.
“I can’t protect players who don’t want to run about, who can’t train or are three stone overweight, getting 60 or 70 thousand pounds a week.”
QPR remain rooted at the foot of the Premier League with four points from eight matches, but Redknapp insists that he has no intention of quitting and says he does not worry about being sacked.
Tim Sherwood is the front-runner for the job should Redknapp relinquish his position, with Sherwood’s former Tottenham backroom team of Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey already in situ at Loftus Road.
“I couldn’t give a monkey’s about speculation. I don’t read the papers. All I can do is do my best,” he said.Redknapp was pleased by his side’s showing in the 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, despite the disappointment of losing the match in the final minute of injury-time to a Steven Caulker own goal.
“There isn’t anyone who could do better here than me. I’ve heard a few names mentioned but they wouldn’t do better.”
“That’s the best I’ve seen the team play since I’ve been here. We were naive. You take the point today because, in our situation, it gives us all a big lift,” he told Sky Sports News.
“We kept coming back. I just felt we were fantastic today. We were solid, but naivety cost us.”
