The
Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State has criticised the Nobel
Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, for saying that the defeat of the outgoing
Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was a mystery.
In a statement
on Monday in Ado-Ekiti by its State Publicity Secretary, Kola Oluwawole,
the party said the statement was “a product of stomach honorarium.”
The
PDP alleged that Soyinka was brought to Ekiti for the inauguration of
the new Government House in a chartered helicopter paid from the coffers
of the state.
It wondered why Soyinka suddenly
turned himself to an image maker of an incumbent governor, who lost an
election in all the 16 local government areas in the state and won in
less than 20 wards out of 177 wards in the state.
Oluwawole
said: “What we are saying is that Fayemi’s woeful loss in the length and
breath of Ekiti should have been a pointer to a pure minded and a sane
person that image laundering for a governor that was totally rejected by
his people could only amount to gluttonic vituperations of highest
demeanour.”
Oluwawole reiterated that never in the history of
the state was government indebtedness was so high and killing like what
is obtainable under Fayemi’s administration.
He said "Ekiti State is now indebted to the tune of N84 billion, the service of which will last till 2020".
He added that it was under Fayemi that pensioners and civil servants
are been freely awarded poverty and penury when the government will not
pay them salary arrears and deductions to their co-operative societies
are being owed up to five months.
According
to him, the image of the outgoing governor that Prof. Soyinka was
trying to launder had been damaged by himself due to excessive greed,
uncontrolled wickedness to workers and high wire corruption that has
been exposed to the people of the state.
He said Soyinka pretended he did not know about it.
Oluwawole stated that despite the rejection of Governor Fayemi at the
poll, his instinct for reckless spending and last minute embezzlement
has made him to be inviting different people to the state to come and
commission mostly uncompleted projects, while milking the purse of the
state dry in the name of entertainment and logistics on each occasion
such VIPs are in Ekiti State.
The PDP spokesman noted that
Soyinka was blindfolded by the chartered helicopter that brought him to
the state, saying if he were to come by road, he would have seen the
physical and human degradation caused by Fayemi that he has come to
praise.
“Soyinka should remain a dreamer anyway because he
cannot understand the plight of Ekiti people under the draconian rule of
Governor Fayemi and the pains and indebtedness he has caused the yet to
be born generation of Ekiti indigenes,” Oluwawole said.
