Fears
that the dreaded Ebola virus may have crept into Anambra state emerged
Thursday following the discovery of the corpse of a citizen of the state
brought in a cargo from Liberia and deposited in the morgue of one Apex
hospital in Nkwelle Ezunaka, Oyi council Area of the state.
The corpse it was gathered was deposited in the hospital morgue at the
weekend by relatives of the deceased who were said to be making
arrangement for his burial ceremony.
But the
Anambra state Government moved promptly Thursday to seal off the
hospital and the mortuary and quarantined the workers and the in
patients on the suspicion that the corpse might be a victim of Ebola
having been brought in a Cargo from Liberia, one of the countries in the
West African sub-region prevalent with the Ebola virus.
Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Josephat Akabuike said in
Awka that the hospital was shut down when an informant from the
community who suspected that the corpse must have been a victim of Ebola
disease in Liberia informed the state government that a corpse was
brought into the community from the West African Country.
He
said the informant who he described as “a good citizen” was aware of the
effects of the Ebola disease in Liberia and as a matter of fact was
responding to the announcements the state government had been making
since the disease became public knowledge.
