About
a hundred people may have been killed in a deadly assault on Damboa
town in Borno State, northeast Nigeria, less than 24 hours after an
initial raid of the area by gunmen.
The town, which is just
about 90 kilometres from the capital of the state, Maiduguri, where
there are reports that the attackers suspected to be members of the Boko
Haram sect hoisted a black and white flag after the attack that
occurred on Saturday.
Survivors of the earlier
attack, which took place on Friday on the town, were trying to bury
their dead after the insurgents were said to have fired propelled
grenades and lobbed homemade bombs into homes.
People who tried to escape were shot down while most of the buildings razed by the suspected terrorist group members.
Residents
of nearby villages and towns are said to have started fleeing their
homes after the deadly Saturday attack which looks like the insurgents
may have taken over the town.
Several villages in the state have
been attacked by suspected members of Boko Haram who are demanding an
Islamic State and an end to western education in the region.
