Arsene Wenger backs Mesut Ozil

Arsene Wenger is confident Mesut Ozil has come to terms with his penalty miss in the Champions League last 16 first leg tie against Bayern Munich last month.

Ozil had the opportunity to put the Gunners ahead after just nine minutes when he was brought down in the area, but his tame effort went straight at Manuel Neuer.

The German international took to his Facebook page to apologise for the miss before he was given some time off to help him recover from the disappointment.

He scored his first goal since the start of December when he netted in the 4-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Everton at the weekend and Wenger believes he is ready to face European champions on Tuesday night.
“I think it affected him mentally too much, the penalty he missed against Bayern. It was not only physical, it was mental,” said Wenger.

“He had the feeling he let the team down at a very important moment of the game, that affected his performance very much.

“Psychologically sometimes the wound is like a physical one. You can talk and talk and talk, but you just have to leave it to time.

“I think he is over it. He has a good opportunity to show on Tuesday night how good he is.”
