36-yr-old man arraigned for raping 11-yr-old girl

A 36-year-old man, Niyi Akanbi, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a minor (name withheld).

It was learnt that Akanbi raped the 11-year-old at her parents’ residence on Danguro Street, Ojota, Lagos State.

They were said to have been caught around 5pm.



The suspect was then arrested and arraigned on one count of rape.

The charge reads, “That you, Niyi Akanbi, on March 5, 2014, at about 5pm at 1, Danguro Street, Ojota, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did have sexual intercourse with a child (name withheld) aged 11 years and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty and elected summary trial.

His defence counsel said the offence was bailable and prayed the court to admit him to bail in liberal terms.

The magistrate, Ms S. O Solebo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

“An additional N100,000 is to be deposited into the Chief Registrar’s account, “ she added.

The matter was adjourned till April 24, 2014 for legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
