After
three weeks of being temporarily shut over a violent protest embarked
on by its students, the Lagos State University’s (LASU) Senate has
arrived at a decision to reopen the institution on Monday, February 24, a
proposal that is yet to be approved by the school management.
According
to reports, the institution’s Senate, made up of the Provost, Deans and
directors, arrived at this decision after hours of deliberations last
Thursday and Friday, in Lagos.
The Senate, it
was gathered, directed that the university be reopened to enable final
year students across all departments to sit for their 2012/2013 academic
session second semester examinations, so that they could meet up with
the Batch A National Youth Service Corps, scheduled to be commence
February.
The decision has, however, not been formalised, as it
is yet to be input in the school bulletin by the LASU management, a step
that would confirm the finality of the decision.
It will be
recalled that LASU students had, on January 23, embarked on a violent
protest, destroying property and disrupting examinations in the school
over management’s refusal to reopen the institution’s online
registeration portal to enable students, who had not completed their
registration do so, a decision which would have prevented affected
students from writing their second semester examinations.
